The Manila Metropolitan Theater was built in 1930-31, by the National Artist for Architecture, Juan M. Arellano. Until the 1940s, this would become the hub for cultural events in the city of Manila. However, the theater was severely damaged by the American bombing during World War II. By the time the theater was reconstructed, most major cultural events were shifted to the FEU Theater (Far Eastern University) and later to the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines). People have struggled to make the relevant once more, but crime, the build up of public traffic in the area, plus a lack of parking has become a hindrance for visitors. The Metropolitan Theater closed in 1996, and is still waiting for the day its door swill open once again.

Constructed in 1931, the Manila Metropolitan Theater is a super example of Philippine Art Deco architecture. Designed by the National Artist for Architecture, Juan M. Arellano, the theater also boasts the sculptures by the Italian Francesco Riccardo Monti. Closed in 1996, the cultural community awaits the day that the doors of the theater will open again.

Manila

I have been to the Manila Metropolitan Theater several times in my life, however I could sense that it had seen better days. Traffic and bickering between government agencies has cause the theater to close down in 1996. Now all that is left of the theater are ghosts of performances past.

The Sunduk is a grave marker used by the Badjao people, in the southern Philippines. These sunduk are usually carved to represent boats, which is both home and livelihood for these nomadic people. Aside from the common boat shapes, these sunduk are also carved with the intricate floral motif called ukkil. The Badjao bury their death in a few sacred islands that are found between the Zamboanga peninsula and the Sulu archipelago. Unfortunately, collectors fancy these intricately designed sunduk, and many pieces have been stolen from these burial isalnds, and are sold in the black market. If this illegal trade continues, the Badjao are forced to discontinue this tradition.

National Museum, Manila

In the basement of the National Museum of the Philippines, there are many offices to house the collection of artifacts, as well as rooms for the scientific work. With the thousands of antiquities under the custody of the museum, not all the pieces are can be displayed for the public. So they are kept in large storage rooms, cataloged. They sit there waiting until the museum personnel decide to create a special exhibition that will feature some of these pieces, for them to be brought back to the light and the eyes of the Filipino people.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have recently uploaded my series called "Diwa nf Sulu" (The Spirit of Sulu). This collection revolves mainly around the culture and history of the Tausug people in the Sulu islands. I have lived with these people, and fell in love with the land and their culture. In fact I have been adopted by a clan there.

These works were commissioned by the Sulu hotel in 2000 to 2001.

For all those who have given me a 'fave" and a "DA watch":

My great thanks to all of you, and I wish I could have the time to thank every one of you, especially for those who commented.

Unfortunately, I am very very swamped with my many responsibilities: in teaching, art making, environmental and human rights concerns . . . plus for the fact that I am maintaining 3 accounts here at DA.

Aside from this, I have my main account (lakandiwa) and the school account that features my students' works (IARFA). I wish to remind you that this account features my old works from at least a decade back, as well as the styles and media I explored then.

Once again, my thanks and blessings

Salamat (thanks) at Samuli (and until then),

Nice myth creatures sir. I think a good drawing also contains a good background story, this might inspire me when I need to work on a conceptual fantasy art in the futures to come :D

This is fantastic hun, really. It is good to see what you used to do in comparison to what you create now. There is a huge difference but I have to say, I still love your work.
